Pioneros, generadores de tendencia siempre. Me gustan las modas, igualmente, adelante de ellas habremos de estar, en forma natural, o plástica, o cinco estrellas, como mas te guste. Exclusive for Agúzate

Balún is one of Puerto Rico’s foremost experimental acts. The electro-acoustic band makes use of a wide array of instruments and sources including: glockenspiel, melodica, guitar, Puerto Rican tiple, shruti box, a toy piano, laptop, Celtic harp, violin, accordion, voice and found sounds. All are used economically to produce melodies that resemble supernatural soundtracks for Atari video games.

The band members are: Angélica Negrón, José A. Olivares, Noraliz Ruiz, and Leonardo Velázquez. Formed in May of 2002, by José and Angélica, Balún self-released their first EP “EP1” in 2003, followed by their second EP “Nada Que Hacer Hoy” in January of 2004. October of 2004 saw the release of their third EP “While Sleeping” for the Vienna-based netlabel Observatory. Following this release, Balún contributed in 2005, a remix for Arturo en el Barco (Carte Postale Records) and a track for the compilation “Porch, Kitchen, Bed, and Basement: Songs from the Blue House” (The Blue House). Brilliante Records from Chicago released their debut album titled “Something Comes Our Way” on June 27, 2006. Balún toured the United States during the summer of 2006 and the band’s first album received positive reviews from various sources such as Cyclic Defrost, Textura, XLR8R Magazine, Crackers United, The Big Take Over, Flavorpill, CMJ, among others. During 2007 the band released new songs on compilations for the German netlabel Aerotone and the French netlabel Petite & Jolie. In the summer of the same year Expansion Team Records re-released worldwide their “EP Collection.” In October of 2007 the band performed in the Pop Montreal Fest. In 2008 they released music in three compilations (MonsterK7, At At Records, and Si No Puedo Bailar…), a remix for Genji Siraisi (Expansion Team) and another remix for Czech band Miou Miou (Minty Fresh). Balún has an upcoming MP3-EP with 8bitpeoples for 2009. Members of Balún are now living in the United States pursuing graduate degrees at NYU and Kent State.

PV: Any time bands announce a new sound is on the works fans get anxious. Should Balún fans worry?

Balún: Well, they should be more worried about finding a job, and in this economy that's the new sound we're looking for.

PV: What is the difference, if any, between Balún's early "Dream Pop" concept and the new production?

Balún: When we worked on our first album "Something Comes Our Way" we had a different way of writing songs. At that moment we all lived in the same region and the collaboration was more immediate. Ever since we moved to the States, the collaborative process became a bit more fragmented, but in a way it enabled everyone to work by themselves and refine what they wanted to do for each song. With the addition of Leo to the band, we have been recently going back to that process of “in person” collaboration. Now the songs emerge from a more acoustic basis that gives room to more creative approaches when we're working on the electronic arrangements and providing more emphasis on harmony and vocal melodies.

PV: Has grad school altered the way in which Balún makes music or thinks aesthetically about sound? (Angélica Negrón holds a Master’s in music composition from NYU and José A. Olivares recently completed a Master’s at Tisch School of the Arts, where he specialized in interactive design, motion graphics and interactive sound).

Balún: It definitely has influenced the way we think about sound because we are now more critically aware of past and current explorations in our fields of study, More than getting an academic degree we have expanded our perspective in music, and our aesthetic vision by listening, performing, sharing and meeting other artists that fall outside of what we usually do.

PV: Do you feel comfortable when uptight journalists like me try to compare Balún to Tangerine Dream or Brian Eno?

Balún: We don't mind. Mostly it's a comparison based on aesthetic similarities, which is completely understandable. Much of our musical influences owe to the work of both artists directly or indirectly. It's all rooted in the musical work developed by those artists and their contemporaries.

PV: What I feel makes Balún so distinctive is the non - threatening way in which your sound creates a sort of pleasing, almost lightweight atmosphere. You don't need to use pyrotechnics, special effects, smoke machines or elaborate stage designs to achieve it. As if your music was a metaphor for optimism in itself. How do you accomplish such complexity?

Balún: There is no intended purpose in our music to come out that way, it's a product of our process. Most songs begin as an experiment or the development of an idea that we shape to what we think it should sound like. It is in this process that we create our palette of sounds. This can create an "ethereal" or "atmospheric" feeling. There is no direct relationship between lyrics and music, but there is a setting that enables them to be put together cohesively. After all, we are more interested in textures and to what extent we can develop new ideas around that frame of sound. Maybe it is this idea of working with textures that unites all of our work.

PV: Do you think being labeled a "Latino" band could affect the global appeal of your music?

Balún: We've never thought about that as a burden or advantage probably because we don't work inside any marketing that capitalizes on such terms. There is definitely a language barrier that non-Spanish speaking listeners may find in our music. Hopefully our music transcends those "obstacles", and so far this is the response we've been getting and we are very happy with that.

PV: Who is Camila?
Balún: Camila is an imaginary friend that lights up when she opens her eyes and looks at you.

¿Qué pasó con los Fabulosos?

Una de mis bandas favoritas repentinamente anuncia que se presentará en Puerto Rico. No pude creerlo. Después de su ausencia en los escenarios al fin vendrían. Esto es hoy noticia vieja pues ser regó el rumor de que su taquilla era demasiada costosa y cuando se acercó la fecha, qué pasó, nada, no hubo concierto. Pienso que la razón principal fue de el costo de la entrada por haber tomado la ridícula desición de presentarse en El Choliseo teniendo el “anfi” que es el lugar ideal para este tipo de eventos.

Para empeorar mi sentimiento de desilusión me topo con que estos grabaron un último disco llamado “La Luz del Rimo”. Éste fue grabado en Estudios Panda y Estudio Donado, durante los meses de julio y agosto de 2008. La mezcla se realizó en Solar Powered Plastic Plant, Los Angeles, California. Los invitados para el disco fueron Hugo Lobo (trompeta, Flughelhorn, dirección de arreglos de Orquesta Sinfónica “Deluxe” para “Basta de llamarme así” y “Malbicho”), Gustavo “Tano” Martelli (percusión) y Matías Brunel (guitarra eléctrica Di Pinto y Gibson Flecha). Además, figuran como “invitados especiales”, los Dancing Mood (Rubén Mederson, saxo; Martino Gesualdi, trombón; Joaquín De Francisco, trombón; Pablo Romagnoli, flauta; Ezequiel Rodrigues, armónica); Damas Gratis (Pablo Lescano, teclados, acordeón, coros, producción y arreglos); Edgar Gómez, guitarra; Carlos Segovia, percusión; César Candia, percusión); DJ Black (skratching en “Malbicho”) y Orquesta Sinfónica “Deluxe” (en “Basta de llamarme así” y “Malbicho”).

Solo contiene cinco canciones nuevas las demás son interpretaciones de discos pasados, la mayoría no muy buenas. No puedo creer el bajón en la calidad del sonido y la falta de creatividad por parte de la banda. Es un disco que no llena las expectativas. Cómo olvidar lo que fue “Fabulosos Calavera” y “La Marcha del Golazo Solitario”, excelentes discos que te dejan sin palabras. Claro está, se tiraron una cumbia a lo Pibes Chorros que les quedó por el libro (soy un cafre). Me imagino que todo esto es para arrancar de nuevo, para pegar de manera fácil aunque, como quiera, este disco no lo venden en Puerto Rico.

Golpe Justo comienza a dar tumbes por distintas partes de la isla en noviembre de 1990. La banda cuenta con varias mutaciones las cuales han sido beneficiosas para la evolución de su música y originalidad.

Golpe Justo cuenta con tres producciones grabadas en casa. La primera es un sencillo de 6 canciones con un sello de Estados Unidos que lleva por nombre Golpe Justo. La segunda es una cinta que contiene 15 temas, se llama Seguimos Adelante (con ésta anticipamos lo que hoy en día está pasando). La tercera producción es un CD de 11 canciones titulado Hecho en Puerto Rico, esto, además de ser cierto, lo usamos para poner a Puerto Rico en alto ante la escena mundial del Hardcore. Justo Records estuvo a cargo de estas dos últimas producciones. La distribución también estuvo a cargo del sello Justo Records. Ha logrado alcanzar las distribuidoras de distintos países, entre ellos: Overcome Records de Francia, Soulforce Records de España y Fragment Music de España también, Release Power Productions de Bélgica (RPP), Back Ta Basics de Nueva Jersey, Spotless Records de Atlanta, Pinhead Records de Argentina, entre otros sellos y distribuidoras que siguen la banda.

Hoy día contamos con personal bastante dedicado a lo que generamos como banda y sin limite de productividad. Nuestra próxima producción se llamará Hard Core Killed the Radio Star; con esto pretendemos romper con el comercialismo que pretende existir en este género y a la misma vez abrirnos puertas en países donde ya hemos logrado al menos abrir la cerradura.

Golpe Justo cuenta con presentaciones en toda la isla desde su comienzo y también en el legendario CBGB’s de Nueva York y en The Pipeline en Nueva Jersey junto a bandas como 25TaLife, Hatebreed y otras bandas con las que hemos compartido como Agnostic Front, Madball, Ten Yard Fight y otras.

En el futuro tenemos planificado una pequeña gira a México y luego a España y Sur América, donde ya hemos sido invitados. En Puerto Rico nos pueden visitar en cualquier antro, barra o chiquero.

No Slogan began in late 2002 as a side project for members of Pretentious Assholes, I Attack and Los Jodidos. Amador, Benny, Chris and Danny wanted to start a band that played in a very Midwest early 80’s style. Although all of the members come from different backgrounds (grind/crust, metal, h.c., punk) we all had a love for early 80’s Midwest punk (Toxic Reasons, Zero Boys, Naked Raygun, Articles of Faith, The Effigies, etc.). Let’s face it No Slogan is a “wanna be” Bhopal Stiffs tribute band. However, we will never come close to being as good as them, but we try.

We don’t remember when our first show was and all of that other bullshit, all we know is that we have played w/ a bunch of good bands, and some really shitty ones as well (often times us being the shitty one!). The important thing is that we have met a ton of cool people within the diy scene during our time in this band, and that’s all that really matters.

Lyrically, our songs deal with/talk about circumstances that affect us (the band) day in, day out. Everything from gentrification in our neighborhoods, to our right to protest in the streets (even under the 2nd incarnation of the Daley Machine/Gestapo regime), how much we hate urban hipsters, the police state that inner city kids in Chicago live under, fashion punks who won’t be punks by the time they reach 21, upper middle class white boys from the suburbs who think it’s so cool and shocking to sport Swazi t-shirts, the exploitation of “illegal” workers in our communities and generally how much we hate right wing America amongst other things. No Slogan is a pro-Paiza (Mexican slang, look it up pendejo), kill whitey band (even the 1.5 Caucasians in the band hate whitey).

Collectively as a band we do consider ourselves a politically conscious band (not as politically active as we should be) and have no qualms about expressing our points of view on and off the microphone. We have no problem with punk as a primal scream, art expression or nihilism but when you start making comments or recordings bashing immigrants, women, minorities and gays then you are no longer apolitical or artistic. Such comments make you a dickhead and ARE political. Fuck trying to be like Sid Vicious, Stiv Bators was much cooler!

No Slogan will play just about anywhere (some people say we play out too much, fuck ‘em) providing the space/show is not booked by or with racist, homophobic, major label sponsorship bands or people. If you have a basement or any other dive please contact us!!! Currently the members in the band are:

Danny Attack was our first drummer and started the band w/ us but left us in November of 2004 because his metal band Malas and his other band I Attack are much better than us, and his other band mates kept bitching about he was in too many bands. In all honesty Danny left on very good terms and will be sorely missed. Joe Skeletor is an old friend and has fit right in w/ the band, but he too is a band whore who plays in too many bands. Nonetheless, he has already written a shitload of new songs w/ us and loves Midwest punk as much as he loves grind core. Better yet he’s also a “southsider”!!!!! Well Amador is a Humboldt Park native (pre-gentrification you fucking hipsters) but he’s cool and a “Paiza” so he’s off the hook. You don’t have to be a “southsider” to be in the band but you do need ghetto credentials. We don’t know why the fuck you have read all of this, but if you have thanx!

Si bien como él mismo lo dice, "parte de mí no cambió, y a la vez/ ya no soy el viejo Andrés, que no dormía jamás", el periplo lo ha dejado intacto, con inspiración a toda prueba y la artesanía del compositor fortalecida por la experiencia. Son doce canciones sin ningún relleno, todas buenas, todas distintas, ciento por ciento Calamaro, aunque el productor Cachorro López comparte la autoría de la parte musical de la mitad de las canciones. Como ya es característico, López garantiza un sonido impecable y una banda efectiva aunque algo impersonal; el toque de garra lo aporta la aparición de viejos amigos como Juanchi Baleirón como guitarrista) y Gringui Herrera.

Ingredientes

* 1 filete de hamburguesa de pollo o de ternera (al gusto)
* pan de hamburguesa
* 2 lonchas de bacon
* 1 loncha de queso
* lechuga, tomate y cebolla en rodajas
* ketchup y mostaza

Hamburguesa con queso y bacon, que le dá un sabor especial y mas ranchero.
Modo de preparacion:
Freímos la carne al punto, ponemos el pan un poco sobre la sarten a tostar.

Lavamos y troceamos la lechuga, el tomate en rodajas y la cebolla en rodajas también muy finas

En un plato colocamos los panes abiertos y vamos poniendo por capas nuestros ingredientes, el queso, la carne, las lonchas de bacon y la lechuga, el tomate y la cebolla.

Aderezamos con mostaza y ketchup (al gusto).

Podemos acompañar con unas crujientes patatas fritas.

In art it is important to remember that the most substantial, meaningful, honest, spiritual, cultural rituals, forms and esthetics come from the underground. In rock music the experience of aggressiveness and surprise, the hymns to the forbidden, the raw and vulgar pleasures of sex and drugs, and the frustration and fear of life are the kind of thing a museum can’t pretend to recreate.

So you know that Dominic Molon, the curator of "Sympathy for the Devil: Art and Rock and Roll since 1967," is in deep trouble when he claims that the show is "the most serious and comprehensive look at the intimate and inspired relationship between the visual arts and rock-and-roll culture to date." Now, here’s a question for the more than capable curator: How do you tame counterculture into the prepackaged pretext of High Art?

Before the show opened, Molon’s efforts already had detractors sufficient to rival the Spanish Inquisition. The reason is obvious -- we all know art exhibitions about rock music suck. Another big problem was that the MCA seems to have scorned one of the most influential and rich rock ‘n’ roll scenes in America by stressing that "the exhibition addresses the importance of specific cities such as London, New York, Los Angeles. . . ."

What about Chicago?

Chicago’s angry new-music mob reports no sightings of the curator at any of the dingy clubs where trends are hatched and passed along to the rest of the country. I can testify I never saw him at the Empty Bottle, The Metro, Fireside Bowl, Hyde Out or Double Door. Talking to the local podcast Bad at Sports, Molon had a good answer for the "poseur" accusation -- he doesn’t go to live shows because he can’t stand drunks. But even if Molon’s admiration for rock is limited to record covers, VH-1 and glossy magazines, he knows he needs the heritage of the city to legitimize his exhibition. Sadly, for "Sympathy," Chicago is a great opening act but not the main attraction.

Very weird, especially since in Chi-town musicians are treated like royalty for their contributions to culture and art at large. The Windy City was key in the development of Electric Blues, Jazz and Rock ‘n Roll, thanks in part to the legendary Chess Records (1950-1972), located at 2120 S. Michigan Avenue. The Rolling Stones even have a song titled 2120 South Michigan Avenue that is an homage to the legendary studios. Also from Chi are Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker. The town is the birthplace of House music, Dust Traxx Records, Industrial music, art-country rockers Wilco, record labels Drag City and Touch and Go, and one-time stadium fillers like the Smashing Pumpkins. It is home base for iconic figures like Steve Albini, founder of the punk band Big Black and producer of acts like Nirvana and High on Fire; the experimental musician Jim ‘O Rourke, who has scored films by Werner Herzog and worked with Sonic Youth; and Wicker Park’s staple schizophrenic poet, artist and musician, the late Wesley Willis. This is the city where hundreds of disco records where burned in the name of rock at a bonfire in Comiskey Park in ’79 -- a truly transcendent example of the perfect juxtaposition between social protest, art and sports. And the list, like the music, could go on and on.

I do believe that Dominic Molon had the best intentions and even a good vision, but the end result can be described as a white man’s suburban teen rock fantasy journey into nostalgia. Tourists may embrace the exhibition, but they won’t catch that close relationship of art and music that’s born from the underground, the outcasts and the sidelines. This is the kind of show where criticism is all about one question -- what about X?

There’s not much to think about in "Sympathy for the Devil." Starting from the hackneyed title, the show’s got no angst, no violence and no irony. Even interesting documents and fanzines are placed in vitrines that suck the life out of them, or hidden in the exhibition catalogue. Record covers are rendered as generic blow-ups and there’s way too much painting referencing photo documentation.

Installations take a big chunk of space, too, like Douglas Gordon’s Bootleg (Cramped), a video projection of grainy slow-motion close-ups of the bodies and facial expressions of the crowds and performers at live music shows. Cramped is a typically hermetic high-art view of musical delirium, and nothing new when compared to the campy documentation of the 1980s glam scene by photojournalist Neil Zlozower, or Penelope Spheeris’ multiple documentaries, The Decline of Western Civilization (1981) and The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years (1988), where fans, groupies and musicians are interviewed sarcastically in their natural habitats.

Suspicious in the mix are trendy art world tricksters like Assume Astro Vivid Focus, who is good and exotic but definitely can’t rock, and whose inclusion might be directed by market trends rather than any real interest. Nicely framed is Robert Longo, with his fashionable drawings of Republican yuppies from the 1980s, here reinterpreted as some kind of violent seizure to a rock soundtrack.

Also included are the now-overused Mike Kelley, Destroy All Monsters, Sonic Youth and Raymond Pettibon, some of whom looked much better at the Whitney Biennial. One of the biggest mistakes is the inclusion of Rirkrit Tiravanija’s Untitled 1996, a transparent and portable rehearsal studio-cum-cage that looks totally out of place, not to mention inessential, given today’s technology. How anti-rock would it be for a band to go to a museum to play on a piece of valuable art made by the favorite pet of curators around the globe?

Not all is problematic, however. My favorite piece in the show is Peter Saville’s sketches, notes and designs for New Order’s Power, Corruption and Lies record. My appreciation is based in nostalgia and process. I also enjoyed Jim Lambie’s homage to The Who. Titled Pinball Wizard, the humongous installation, specially commissioned for the show, features his habitual colorful stripes and swirls on the floor along with sticks covered with thin thread that revolve around a life-sized sculptural eagle.

A great surprise is to see works by the Chicago-based artist Pedro Bell, whose paintings illustrate the freaky, raw, sci-fi sexual imagery from Parliament Funkadelick. This reminded me of the absence in the show of things by African Americans and other "minorities," which would include the Black Punk era, Bad Brains and the art-packed magazine Rocktober. Not to mention ‘70s Latino psychedelic rock and the New Wave Argentinean scene from the late ‘80s, and the contemporary Mexican Puerto Rican Hardcore and Noise music that relies heavily on collaborations with visual artists. During the late ‘90s, 7/3 Split Gallery in Chicago would open its exhibition space to weekend shows organized by Traschcore kids, mostly from Mexican and Latino neighborhoods, demonstrating that the multicultural pot assembled for artistic collaborations easily extends beyond the established art centers.

Unsatisfied, I keep looking and thinking of the "what about" factor. What about Peter Hujar, Torbjørn Rodland, David Wojnarowicz, Punk Planet or H.R. Giger? And what about the Chicagoans? Hardcore Histories series at Mess Hall, Crosshair Printing, Screaming in Music projects organized by Marc Fischer, Academy Records, Wesley Kilmer, Terence Hannum, Chuck Jones, Artloinz, Siebren Veersteg, Matt Hanner, Rob ad Zena Zakowski, E.C. Brown, and Phillip Von Zweck.

And after a couple of fast rounds around the MCA’s tunnel vision, I felt sick, angry and ready to find a real club, a real show, and a real cold cheap beer. And finally, I left.

Kalashnikov were born in 1996 on the dirty floor of a squat in Milan, to give vent to the adolescent restlessness of three guys with their ears clogged by Wretched, Bad Religion and Clash. Under the drunkenness of the heavenly libertarian nectar and rejecting the ruling alternative thrash music, Kalashnikov are created with the wish to put together their own utopias and passion. Through the years there were many changes either in the line-up, or in our music and our lyrics, but anyway some features have lasted: Kalashnikov have always played a concentration of melodic and fast music with high libertarian spirit.

Dejando a un lado los debates de gustos musicales, concedamos que hay diferentes tipos de bandas. Independientemente del género que manejen, hay bandas entretenidas, bandas buenas y bandas importantes. Los Lácteos, una juvenil banda de rock local, produce música buena, se maneja de forma entretenida y toca temas importantes. Debe quedar claro que cuando se les dice juveniles, se hace con toda la intención de resaltar las energéticas actitudes que sólo son viables en la juventud. Juvenil no es lo mismo que infantil. MDO y Britney Spears son infantiles. Los Lácteos están vivos y son, o al menos intentan ser, "quienes deciden su futuro y sus propios creadores" y no te permiten olvidarlo mientras tocan.

No importa que tipo de música tocan. Hay bandas a las que es injusto endilgarles categorías bobas como "rock" o "punk-rock" o "punk-rock-melódico" o "punk-rock-melódico-en español". Sí, hay guitarra con distorsión. Dos de ellas, de hecho. Pero no necesariamente representa la amenaza de angustia infantil de tres acordes que suele ser tan deseada y disfrutada cuando se busca estallar musicalmente. Sus guitarras se hablan, se dialogan, se retan y finalmente se reencuentran en una armonía ejemplar, firme y sincera. La batería es sencilla. Lleva la canción por donde tiene que ir, acentúa lo que hay que acentuar y suena tan encendida como un juego de ollas de acero bajando por una escalera de mármol. Fuerte, caótica y peligrosa, pero nunca innecesaria ni desacoplada. Al bajo le toca la tan esperada tarea de ser el árbitro entre la matemática de las guitarras y el ataque de la batería. Lo que sorprende es que, además de mantener a todos en jaque, tenga también energía y espacio para hacer de las suyas y tirar melodías que estarán sonando en tu cabeza hasta 4 horas luego de terminar la canción. Juntos forman un trío tan inaguantablemente fuerte que sólo el contraste de las dos y tres melodiosas voces que usan en sus canciones y un lindo e inesperado piano pueden apaciguar. El resultado es una música que es fuerte, retumbante e intimidante, y a la misma vez pegajosa, dulce y llena de emoción. Nadie dijo que la bestia no podía ser hermosa.

En vivo son todo esto y más. Con la oportunidad de ser testigo de lo que hacen, te das cuenta de que tienen momentos muy variados. Pero esto lo que hace es acentuar el aura de fenómeno natural que tienen. Como una nube de tormenta, a veces te destroza relámpago tras relámpago y a veces solo envía una leve llovizna con un sencillo mensaje: la próxima vez, esto podría ser un rayo. Y lo es. Y te cae encima y te electrocuta y te hace pensar que quizá todavía estás vivo, que hay cura para el aburrimiento.

Nada en esta banda es rebuscado. No hay un sólo momento en donde su música y su poesía parezcan haber sido fruto de mucho esfuerzo. Estamos ante un grupo de jóvenes que dan lo que les sale sin tener que pasar mucho trabajo. Y ahí precisamente está el encanto. Toda esta energía, toda esta belleza, llega a ti pura, cruda y genuina. Si la recibes o no es un asunto casi personal. Pero ahí estarán como quiera. Cinco jóvenes sin compromiso, haciendo lo que saben hacer y escondiéndose del hastío de ser habitantes de una ciudad de fin de un siglo y comienzo de otro. Todo esto sin dejar de ser simplemente jóvenes tratando de pasarla bien. Y la palabra clave aquí es tratando. "Ilumina mi espíritu pastor de la verdad". ¿Y esto qué es, sarcasmo o plegaria? Uno nunca sabe si los Lácteos están haciendo una burla subliminal de las mentalidades de esclavos de quienes los rodean o si de hecho están angustiados al encontrarse faltos de algo que les fue prometido y nunca llegó. Y esa incertidumbre, alumbrada por la eterna sabiduría de que "nada volverá a ser como lo era antes", te da en la cara y te advierte que no subestimes los poderes de la juventud.
